Big hardwoods with two or three trunks that fork low, common in Greenville’s older water oaks and pecans, tend to split at the fork as they get heavy. Cabling installs steel cable between the trunks high in the crown so they support each other in wind instead of levering apart. Bracing adds threaded rod through the fork itself when it has already begun to split. Both can add years to a tree you want to keep over a house or a driveway. Matthew installs the hardware, checks it on later visits, and tells you honestly when a tree is past the point where cable will hold it.
Every removal makes wood. Hardwood logs get bucked, split, and stacked to season, and when there is enough on hand Matthew sells it by the load and delivers around Greenville. Thin leaves or none while the neighbors' trees are full, bark falling off in sheets, mushrooms or shelf fungus at the base, a line of woodpecker holes, dead limbs in the top of the crown, or a new lean. Pines in particular go from green to dead in one summer when beetles get in. Any of those is worth a look, and looking is free.
Sometimes. A tree that has always leaned and has a solid root plate can be fine for decades. A tree that started leaning after a storm, with soil heaving on the back side, is failing and needs to come down. Matthew can tell the difference on site.
Done right, no. The cable is anchored high in the crown with hardware that lets the tree grow around it, and it keeps a split fork from tearing open in wind. It needs to be checked every few years. It is not a fix for a tree that is already rotten through the fork.
