Thinning takes out a portion of the interior and crossing limbs so light and wind pass through the canopy instead of hitting it like a sail. A thinned oak or pecan holds up far better in a storm, dries out faster after rain, and lets grass grow under it again. It is not the same as hacking the tree back; the shape stays and the tree looks like it has always looked, just lighter. Raising means removing the lowest limbs to lift the canopy off the roof, the driveway, the sidewalk, or the yard you want to mow standing up. People use the words for the same thing and that is fine. In the trade, trimming usually means cutting for clearance and appearance, like limbs off a roof or a crown shaped back. Pruning means selective cuts for the tree's health and structure, like removing crossing limbs or deadwood. Most jobs are some of both. Matthew prices the job, not the word.
Late winter, before the trees leaf out, is best for most hardwoods because the structure is visible and the tree heals fast in spring. Pines can be trimmed most of the year. Storm clearance work happens whenever it is needed. Oaks are best left alone in spring to avoid disease spread. If a limb is over your roof, do not wait for the right month.
Roughly a quarter of the live canopy in one season is the safe limit for a healthy tree. More than that stresses it and invites sprouting and decay. If a tree needs more than that, Matthew will tell you whether to do it in two rounds or whether the tree has really reached the point of removal.
No. Topping, which means cutting the main limbs off flat, ruins the tree and creates weak, fast growing sprouts that break in the next storm. If you want a tree shorter, crown reduction does it with proper cuts back to a lateral limb. If the tree cannot be reduced enough to be safe, removal is the honest answer.
